Food tastes like itself at organic cafe
By LUNCH BUNCH
Two can eat out for less than $20
Staff Writer Audrey Parente owed a lunch to her friend Laurence Bennett, who recently retired from The News-Journal, so she asked him to meet her at noon on a Tuesday at Love Whole Foods in Ormond Beach.

Q. How did the place look?
This is no ordinary eating experience. Don’t go to Love Whole Foods cafe, tucked into a corner of an organic food and health store, expecting someone to take your order and serve you. But if you love the true unadulterated flavor of foods, if you really want to taste the rich flavor of a coffee-colored crimini mushroom or a free-range turkey, then try this place. The takeout box you’ll tote to a tiny indoor nook or outdoor table there will likely hold a flavor-rich experience.

Q. What about the atmosphere?
The grocery store itself was bustling. Tucked into a corner behind the checkout area, past a few tiny round tables, the cafe’s refrigerated display case had abundant wraps, sandwiches, quiche and other choices. A blackboard said the soup of the day was cheesy cauliflower. One of several cooks carried a gorgeous potato casserole to a counter, and another cook was creating a multi-colored vegetable stir-fry.

Q. What entrees did you order?
The stir-fry wouldn’t be ready for a bit and the casserole was too hot to cut yet, so we shared a turkey-vegetable spinach wrap and one small order of the soup and said we wanted the other stuff as soon as it was ready.
We plunked down at one of the tiny tables and, of course, our eyes were bigger than our appetites because after we each finished half a very fresh, tasty, all-organic wrap and truly yummy soup, we were stunned at the size of the boxed stir-fry with noodles. Organic crimini and shiitake mushrooms; red, green and yellow bell peppers; yellow squash; cauliflower; celery; greens; green beans and carrots packed the container. We slowed and decided one of us would take most of it home.
We still had the potato/turkey casserole to come. We nibbled, claiming to be full, but before long, the entire scrumptious souffle-like concoction was consumed. We were stuffed but just couldn’t stop eating it. An orange-mango juice from the grocery section washed it all down.

Q. What was the total?
No tip was necessary because we helped ourselves and bused our own table, but we probably should have paid for the food when we got it because we ended up bringing our empty containers to the check-out counter. The wrap was $5.99; soup, $2.50; stir-fry, $4.99; potato casserole, $5.99; orange-mango juice, $2.49, totaling just over $23 with tax. We waddled out with our leftovers.
